This weekend my mother-in-law asked how long we’d been together. My math has always worked like this:
- I graduated from high school in 94.
- I first started ‘internetting’ in December of 94.
- I met Alyson in person a year later.
- I asked her to go out with me a year after that.
So to do that math… that’s 2017 – 1996 = 21 years, though we won’t hit that date until early next month but the date of our 14 year wedding anniversary seems like a good day to commemorate a relationship that has endured for more than half my life.
Do you want to know the quick and easy secret for having a long and happy relationship? Yeah, me too. I’ve got nothing to tell you that doesn’t fall into some variation of ‘communication is key’, ‘you have to work at it’, ‘blah blah blah’.
The truth is, I more or less managed to luck into a relationship with someone who wants most of the same things out of life that I do. On top of that she’s an amazingly talented woman who is funny and just fun to be around. I clearly married up. And on top of that she seems to think that I’m pretty ok. For my part, I do my best to make sure she doesn’t regret her decission to marry me.
What’s next for us? Who knows, but I’m looking forward to it.⭐ - Bill
